A highlight of the evening was an update on the Bearcat Loyalty Card program sponsored by Converse County Bank to benefit the students of Douglas schools. Nearly $20,000 has been given to the district for individual student needs, national travel for student activities, and will be used this summer for scholarships for driver's education. These dollars have been especially helpful to the district's students in light of significant decreases in state funding. Thanks to Converse County Bank and to patrons from all across our community!
 
Cara Bolinger and Jennifer RinnCara Bolinger, rural school and Douglas Intermediate School secretary was honored as the Spotlight Employee of the Month.  Cara's niece, Jennifer Rinn, a member of the school board awarded her the certificate. During Cara's eleven years with the district,  she has worn many hats.  She's been the rural secretary for all eleven of those years as well as fulfilling other duties. The first four years she worked at the Douglas Intermediate School in the opportunity room.  She then moved to the Central office and assisted with the BASE program.  While working as the Rural secretary at the Central building, Cara often filled in for the other secretaries and helped with other duties as needed.  Last year, Cara relocated to the DIS elementary building to become the DIS/ Rural Secretary. Cara helped make the transition easy for all of us and continues to help with nursing duties, orders, rewards, counseling and wherever else she is needed.  Cara has truly been a pleasure to work with.  
 
DHS Welding projectsThe district welding programs displayed their projects at the meeting. The projects, presented by board member Jay Butler, included a park bench. Benches built by students were donated to Advanced Animal Care and the Converse County Bank, among others. An after-school business developed by students has been building pump skids for Peabody Energy; students have built 20 pump skids and will finish 10 more. Five students have been employed as part of this project. Students have also built projects for Kocker Kustom Fab. The Wyoming State Champion SkillsUSA Welding Fabrication team (Kale Shelver, Dalton Chapman, and Trevor Sorg) built a fire pit that was then donated for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation banquet. In fact, the Douglas SkillsUSA chapter boasted the first four places in the state competition! Thanks to Mr. Adels and his students!
 
Douglas Middle School students under the direction of Adam Pauli also displayed their projects. There were simple mousetrap cars completed by 6th graders, with more advanced CO2 cars in 7th grade. Students discuss concepts such as aerodynamics, drag, and gear rations, and implement some of those into the cars. The DMS students also showed off some their after school welding projects. 
 
The school board held a hearing about the mills to be levied for next year. Those mills are unchanged from previous years. A half mill was approved for the EWC BOCES, 1/10 mill for Northwest BOCES, 4/10 mill for Northeast BOCES, and 1 recreation mill.
 
The board approved final reading on policies about homeless students and parent/family engagement. Second reading policies approved were regarding memorials, support staff work year, negotiations, relations with other educational systems, and home schooling. 
 
TDS Construction was awarded two bids, one to repair and upgrade the ice melt system at DHS/Rec Center and one for water intrusion projects at DHS.
 
Business manager Tracy Boner gave the board a review of the projected 2018-19 budget, and proposed activities handbooks were reviewed. The board is considering a process for reviewing those handbooks in more detail. Activities Director Justin Carr also reviewed a proposal to add indoor track as a winter sport. The district has been partnering with Laramie for the past few years.
 
The rural students are taking their every-third-year trip to Yellowstone, so the board approved that travel request as well as an out-of-district student request and two student support services contracts with Region V BOCES in Jackson. 
 
Other business items included ratification of the IBN agreement proposed by the district Interest Based Negotiations team. The team reached consensus on the IBN agreement after two full days of discussion at the end of April. The agreement was presented to the staff last week. The district will have the same auditor for next year, and Tracy Boner will serve as the SRRP representative. 
 
A bus agreement was approved to allow Platte 1 to bring a bus into the district to transport students, and a call for bids was approved to upgrade the video systems in 15 buses. Special education will be purchasing some new flat panel displays to replace some very old, outdated Smartboards.
 
Convening as the Converse County Recreation Board, the board approved a bid to upgrade Nida Field after the current baseball season and extended the interior paint bid for the rec center.
